Every month, Janis and Susan, two members of the KCLS Traveling Library Center (TLC), drive one of our big red Library2Go! vans out to three special sites on Mercer Island bringing books, movies, music and magazines to the residents.
These three lucky locations – all retirement/assisted living facilities - are Island House Retirement, Aljoya, and Covenant Shores. All these stops are quite busy with excited residents eager to check out and return library items. But unlike our other bookmobile services where patrons climb on board the vehicles, TLC wheels their bookcarts off the van and into the lobbies of all the stops they visit. This is to make it easier for the residents to access our library materials.
Janis said while few DVDs are checked out, nearly everyone is keen on the books, both large print and regular. She noted all three sites have their own book clubs, exclaiming, “They’re really voracious readers Susan added, “They are very diverse in what they like to read.”
KCLS’ Mobile Services, opens a new window visits similar sites daily throughout King County, helping patrons who are not mobile enough to visit their local libraries on their own. Mobile Services also visit day cares, community centers, apartment complexes and other facilities, offering the latest bestsellers and hottest DVDs, as well as venerable classics.
