Statement About the Brave Books Meeting Room Reservations

Author Kirk Cameron and publisher Brave Books have been urging their supporters to host story hours on August 5 at public libraries across the United States. They have encouraged community members to read Brave Books at these events. Brave Books describe themselves as a faith-based publisher. Both Brave Books and Kirk Cameron share anti-LGBTQ+ viewpoints.

Community members have reserved meeting rooms at the Bellevue and Burien Libraries on August 5 to read Brave Books. We do not endorse or sponsor either of the Brave Books events.

Any group or community member may book a meeting room at the King County Library System if they follow our Meeting Room Use Policy. We cannot discriminate against viewpoints. Viewpoint discrimination is unconstitutional and an infringement on the First Amendment.

We continue to be guided by our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) values. We strive to build communities of inclusion and belonging. And we are committed to supporting and celebrating our LGBTQ+ patrons, staff and community partners.
