King County Library System today announced KCLS Rewind, opens a new window, a first-of-its-kind challenge for adults that taps into the unmistakable thrill of earning pizza for turning pages – now remixed for the 21st century. Think pizza boxes, throwback playlists, and the satisfying click of a library checkout scanner. KCLS Rewind invites adults to relive a favorite childhood motivation while discovering everything today’s library has to offer. And if patrons didn’t get the chance to read for pizza in the 90s, they can discover it for themselves through KCLS Rewind.
KCLS Rewind will kick off March 2. Many of KCLS’ 50 locations will host themed programming – including Spanish-language offerings – during the two-month program, which runs through April. From in-person events to online activities, libraries will be leaning into the bright colors, big flavors, and bold fun of the 90s.
“Earning pizza for library time was the ultimate 90s flex,” Executive Director Heidi Daniel said. “KCLS Rewind brings that same energy back, but with a modern remix. You don’t have to be a super reader – just show up, try something new, and start stacking slices. The library has way more going on than people realize, and KCLS Rewind puts it all on full display.”
By signing up for the free program, patrons will earn “pizza stamps” by completing a mash-up of library-centric and ‘90s-themed challenges that inspire retro joy. Each completed task brings patrons closer to filling their pizza boxes for prizes. Challenge highlights include:
- Checking out a book from a curated, 90s-themed reading list
- Attending a KCLS Rewind program in-person or online
- Streaming movies on Kanopy, Hoopla, or Estante Infinito
- Exploring free job resources and resume review through the library
- Listening to throwback tunes on Hoopla
A complete list of tasks can be found on the KCLS Rewind website on March 2. Patrons can complete the same challenge multiple times to fill their pizza boxes.
Finishers will receive a free pizza slice coupon from Pagliacci Pizza, while supplies last. All finishers will be entered into drawings for totally rad 90s-themed KCLS Rewind mugs, as well as the grand prize of a pizza oven, Pagliacci Pizza gift card, and an EReader, allowing them to combine pizza and reading in the 21st century.
