Fire Lookouts Wanted

Holy smoke! With fires raging all around, and haze filling our normally crisp King County air, my attention turned to the interesting people who spend their summers watching over our forests. In fact, did you know Jack Kerouac spent 63 days of the summer of 1956 in the fire lookout atop Desolation Peak?

Some Washington fire lookouts are available as rentals, and offer a unique and rustic getaway experience. The rentals are largely reserved through the US Forest Service using Recreation.gov. Now is the perfect time to book your trip for next summer as the slots fill up quickly.

So, before you head out “on the road,” to follow in Kerouac’s footsteps, view these additional items from your library.
