Professional & Business Certifications

Professional & Business Certifications

The King County Library System (KCLS) has partnered with the Washington State Library to offer self-paced certification prep courses and exam vouchers. Thanks to KCLS’ partnership with the Washington State Library, KCLS library card holders can take free online classes, practice tests, and proctored exams. These certifications can be listed on resumes and may be required for certain jobs.

Available Certifications

Not all exams are offered for each certification type. To find out if the exam you are interested in is offered, check out the Washington State Library’s list of current exams available.

To learn more about certifications in general, check out the Washington State Library’s Digital Skills Resources for Washingtonians webpage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Once you are logged into the self-service portal with your KCLS library card, you can browse the available certifications and request a code for a learning course to begin studying. If you already know the course content, you can go straight into requesting a practice test. Once you have requested and completed a practice test, you will submit it to the Washington State Library through the portal for score verification. After they have verified you passed the practice test, you will receive instructions to sign up for a proctored exam.

  • Certifications are completely free through this KCLS partnership with the Washington State library. The exams are also available through other vendors, but there are often exam and proctoring fees. Using the Washington State Library self-service portal for courses, practice tests, and exams allows you to complete the process at no cost.

  • The PIN is the same as your KCLS library card PIN. If you don't know your library card PIN, try the last four digits of your phone number. If you haven't set up a PIN and password, it defaults to the last four digits of the phone number in your library.

If that doesn't work, reset your PIN and password using your library card number. Or, show photo ID to staff at the library.

  • Check out the certifications FAQ page. Answers to many common questions can be found there. If your question is not addressed in the FAQs, you can also request assistance with the Washington State Library self-service certification portal by emailing them at certify@sos.wa.gov.

  • KCLS does not proctor or administer certification exams. To request accommodation, please contact your proctoring organization directly. If you have any issues with this process please email certify@sos.wa.gov.
