KCLS' Opera Previews by Norm Hollingshead pack our meeting room every time. Devoted fans of opera turn out in droves to gain understanding of plot lines, historical context, composer biographies and, sometimes, juicy operatic scandals that add to their enjoyment of upcoming Seattle Opera's productions. The information is certainly a draw, but Norm, as a presenter, has developed a following of people captivated by his charismatic presentations, passion and deep knowledge of the opera world.
Norm's love of opera began in 1964 when he received a recording of Leontyne Price singing TOSCA. Her enchanting soprano voice compelled Norm to collect opera, read about opera, listen to opera and attend opera performances world-wide. After an incredible experience watching Seattle Opera's 1975 RING cycle, Norm volunteered to provide opera previews for the company. His relationship with KCLS began when Newport Way Library invited him to offer his signature opera insights to the community. Word spread to other library branches, and the rest is history.
Norm typically presents at 9-16 KCLS libraries during each opera cycle. He's announced the 2017-2018 opera season will be his last. Even if you're not an opera fan, try to catch one of Norm's Opera Previews soon. His passion, knowledge, captivating story-telling, and snippets of music may change your mind.
