One-night Stands: Short Horror Stories to Read in One Night

It's that time of year again when the seasons change and things start to get spooky. Looking for something scary to read but don't want to commit to more than one night of frightening reading? Try a one-night stand, a book that you can read in one night. Here are some chilling titles to get you started:

Through the Woods

This graphic novel doesn't take long to read, but its chilling effects last longer than the time it takes to finish. The several short stories tell haunting tales that reminded me of the ghost stories of my youth, but more macabre. Think Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but more mature, and a bit more graphic.

The Turn of the Screw

This is an oldie, but a goodie (originally published in 1898). Ghosts? Check. Creepy Victorian mansion? Check. Suspense and a vague sense of evil? Check.

Don't Look Now

This collection contains Du Maurier's novelette, The Birds, which inspired the Alfred Hitchcock film by the same name. It also inspired nightmares for me as a kid, the memories of which still bring a frightened smile to my face.
