Music for Sounders Game Day

We're getting to the final weeks of the regular season in Major League Soccer, and your Seattle Sounders are battling their way into the postseason as we speak. Will they make the playoffs? We'll have to hold on through a wild October to find out!

A lot of professional soccer players have hype music they like to listen to while getting ready for games. A few times in the past Sounders players have shared what they listen to before matches, and that inspired me to start making some playlists of my own. So here are a few songs that can help get you pumped up and ready for game day, all available to stream on hoopla:

Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (track 1 on Nevermind)

This grunge classic gets played inside the C-Link right before the start of every home game, usually set to video footage of the Sounders scoring on whichever opponent they happen to be playing that day. Works to get the crowd going every time.

Macklemore - "Firebreather" (Track 8 on Gemini)

Honestly, there's a lot of Macklemore that's suitable for a hype song list because he really likes to write songs about how awesome he is. "Can't Hold Us," "Ain't Gonna Die Tonight," and "Glorious" would also work. And since he's a Seattle artist his music also often features in the stadium on Sounders game days. I chose this one specifically for it's thumping bass beat, and for its guitar riffs and backup vocals that are reminiscent of another Seattle legend, Jimi Hendrix. (Explicit lyrics, fyi.)

Whitney Houston - "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (Track 8 on Chillout 80s, originally from the album Whitney)

Occasionally, Sounders players get to ask for specific music to listen to during pre-game warm ups. When defender Chad Marshall got to pick, he went with this Whitney Houston classic. While the song produced chuckles on the field, they did go on to win that match versus the Philadelphia Union, so... *shrug*

Cali y El Dandee - "Gol" (Track 2 on 3 A.M.)

There's no denying that some of Seattle's best and most exciting players have come to us from South and Central America. In fact our two biggest marquee players, Nicolás Lodiero and Raúl Ruidíaz, are from Uruguay and Peru, respectively. If you listen to any given post-match interview with a player, you're likely to hear something like this reggaetón hit that was popular during the 2014 World Cup playing in the background. (It's literally about playing soccer, y'all.) ¡Vamos Sounders!

David Guetta (feat. Sia) - "Titanium" (Track 13 on Nothing But The Beat)

It's been a really dramatic season for the Sounders this year; full of injuries, losses, and unpleasant surprises. But for all the setbacks, the team looks like they have a decent chance to end the season on a high note and this pulse-pounding dance track is all about being stronger than adversity.

Perry Como - "Seattle"

There's nothing particularly "hype" about Perry Como, but this classic pop ballad has been used by the Sounders for decades in video promos, and it's sung by the supporters section at the kickoff of each half at every game.

The last Sounders home game of the 2018 regular season is on October 28 vs. the San Jose Earthquakes.

What do you think of these picks? What's on your pre-game or workout list? Let me know in the comments.
