Humans of Libraryland: The Library Virtuoso

Welcome back to Humans of Libraryland, where we explore the lives and personalities of the people who work at your public library! What are our favorite summertime activities? (Probably reading, if we're being honest.) Are there really gremlins who live in our computing equipment and only behave when library staff is watching? (I mean, it's my personal theory, but...)

This week, we're chatting with an artist and a music lover. Say hello to Jordan from North Bend!

Name: Jordan H.

Position: Library Technical Assistant at North Bend

How long have you been in your current position?

Since January 1, 2017

How long have you worked for KCLS?

I started in August of 2013 as a page at Auburn.

What are your job duties in a sentence or two?

I help members of the community sign up for library accounts and assist them in using the variety of services the library provides.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Currently, my favorite book is The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It's a coming of age story based in the early 90s, about a boy named Charlie finding his place in life. I relate a lot to him. Quiet, reads a lot, not fitting into the crowd. Like Charlie, I feel that I have gathered a great close circle of wonderful people who I call friends as much as I call family.

Are you Team Book or Team eBook?

I have no issues with eBooks but I have yet to use them. (Sorry to my Kindle that is just sitting at home collecting dust.)

In which Hogwarts house would the Sorting Hat place you?

Slytherin and proud! (Yay! Another Slytherin! Snake-y high five! - The Editor)

What is something you’ve learned in the last week?

I learned that April 12 is Mobile Library day and that the month of April is National Poetry Month. (Time to work on some poetry!)

What’s the last book, movie, or TV show that made you cry?

I would say the last movie that made me cry was Sully when I saw it in theaters. I don't want to spoil it, but what that man had gone through after such heroic actions was very emotional. Sully is based on the true story of the pilot who had landed a plane on the Hudson River in 2009.

Where do you most want to travel, but have never been? Why do you want to go there?

I have always wanted to visit Austria and Scotland to see the castles.

If money was no object, what would you do all day long?

Travel everywhere, sleep in, lounge on the beach/poolside, and enjoy the nightlife with friends.

What is your favorite song?

My favorite song would have to be "Clarity" by Zedd (Track 5 on the album of the same name. - The Editor). EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is one of my favorite genres of music and "Clarity" is orchestrated with many layers of sounds that hits a lot of emotions and makes me feel like dancing.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was really young I think I wanted to be a movie star, but when I was a teen I had learned more about how the library functions behind the scenes and I fell in love with the idea of working with books and bringing a love of books to the community. So I've found my dream job.

If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be? Why?

I would either see the proclaimed miracles of Jesus Christ or the Stonewall Uprising.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love seeing people be excited about reading and learning. I think society makes its best advances when everyone has free access to all information.

What is your creative output?

I enjoy writing and dancing a lot, but my favorite is painting. It's very focused and peaceful, and I feel proud to have created something that I can show people.

Now I feel inspired to take a painting class! Thanks for the chat, Jordan.
